dawnrose

eggs to ashes - & - torn threads

2 pieces created for RESPONSE at Landguard Fort, Felixstowe, 22-24 October 2010.

in RESPONSE to the fort, both pieces continued the theme of transformation: eggs to ashes responding to the fort's role in the country's defense; and torn threads responding to the nature reserve and sea which surrounds the fort, and the immense effect humankind is having on the natural world.

eggs to ashes - performed in the face of a biting east wind, eggs to ashes used the story of dawnrose's grandfather, the last man to leave the sinking RMS Lancastria during the Battle of Britain, as a platform to create unsettling imagery of war and torture. dawnrose welcomed cross continent collaboration with Jon Harris

torn threads - personifying a black widow spider, dawnrose spent hours secretively exploring the nooks and crannies of the fort and suspending threads, some torn, some left to be torn, always in the presence of messages carrying gerald durrell's quote.
